THE NEW BARKER 65 www.TheNewBarker.com Isosceles’ Day is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Kevin Meechan. We asked our junior rover reporter and contributor,Amelia Ann, to review the book for us. Amelia Ann agreed that the author’s writing alongside the illustrations, took a potentially sad story and turned it into a happy one. Isosceles, the dog, was neglected and most likely had been abused for the first three years of his life. He and his sister were left outdoors to contend with the ele- ments, including temperatures that dropped to -20F in the winter. When the dogs were given up for adoption, they were separated. Isosceles was taken to a shelter.Thankfully, his first day at the shelter he was adopted by Kevin Meechan, the author. For the first time in his short life, Isosceles finally had a home, a warm bed, and homemade food. In the book, Mole is Isosceles’ friend who wants him to have a wonderful day. So Mole starts their day by serving break- fast. But, not just any old breakfast. “My favorite part of the book was the dancing eggs,” said Amelia Ann.“Oh, and the platypus swimming.”The book was fun to read, but the best part was finding out about Isosceles’ backstory. “Once I realized what he had been through, we re- read the book,” said Amelia Ann, who read it with her mom, Andrea GonzmartWilliams.“And it all made sense to us! I loved reading it a second time,” said Amelia Ann. As a young volunteer at the Humane Society ofTampa Bay and participant in their annual Critter Camp, Amelia Ann said she’ll probably end up with at least 20 dogs and 20 cats, some day. Her advice for those contemplating adopting another pet:“Even if you have one dog and one cat, you can always have one more.” Check out Isosceles’ adventures and view Kevin Meechan’s artwork at Isoscelesday.com Book’s Message Is Revealed In Young Reader’s Second Reading.
